FE Economic Editor AZM Anas picks up top UN journalism award

AZM Anas, Economic Editor at The Financial Express, has received Gold prize for the “Prince Albert II of Monaco and UNCA Awards for coverage of Climate Change”, the first Bangladeshi journalist to get such an honour.

Isabelle Picco, Permanent Representative of Monaco to the United Nations, presented the Gold medal to Mr Anas at the Awards gala, held recently at Cipriani, Wall Street, New York in the United States.

Among the dignitaries, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, UN Population Fund Goodwill envoy Ashley Judd and Bangladesh's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Rabab Fatima were present at the black-tie event.

A total of 10 journalists have been awarded this year in three categories representing such media organisations as Bloomberg, Al Jazeera, and PBS Newshour.

This year, Mr Anas has become the lone Asian reporter to win this prestigious prize and the jury board recognised his  “eye-opening” series of articles on the grave environmental challenges facing Bangladesh, which sits on a massive river delta and is especially vulnerable to climate change.

The articles document “alarming erosion and landslides contributing to economic dislocation and uncontrolled migration,” the panel of juries said.

A Jefferson Fellow, Mr Anas has won several national and international awards and honours.

Each year, the United Nations Correspondents Association, or UNCA, honours reporters for best print, broadcast and online media coverage of the UN, its agencies and field operations.
