Ershad dismisses doubts regarding fair RpCC polls

Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad on Monday dismissed any doubt of having a fair and neutral Rangpur City Corporation polls on December 21.

He also said there is no need to deploy army in the election as it is local body one, not the general election.

"Mostafa is a very popular candidate who has good connection with people of all walks of life. People here also love plough (Jatiya Party's election symbol). I hope a peaceful and fair election will be held here and my party candidate will win it," Ershad said.

A UNB report says the former president came up with the remarks while talking to reporters at his local residence here.

Outgoing mayor Sarfuddin Ahmed is contesting the election on Awami League (AL) ticket to retain his mayoral position while Kausar Zaman Babla and Mostafizur Rahman Mostafa are vying for the post of mayor on BNP and Jatiya Party tickets respectively.

Ershad criticised AL’s leaflet against his party’s candidate said people will elect Mostafa as he is a good person no matter who says what.

Earlier, the Jatiya Party chief left Dhaka for Saidpur by air at 10:30am.

As he reached his Pallinibas residence from Saidpur, Jatiya Party co-chairman and its local leaders and activists greeted him presenting a bouquet.
