The Election Commission has categorically said it will not deploy the army in the upcoming city corporation elections in Gazipur and Khulna.
Police and the Rapid Action Battalion backed by border guards are enough to maintain the law and order in the election areas, said EC Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed following a meeting with law-enforcement agencies on Thursday.
The commission’s decision came against a backdrop of BNP’s long-standing demand for the army deployment in the upcoming election, reports bdnews24.com.
“The past local elections have become successful with the help of law-enforcement agencies. The upcoming election will also be successful,” Ahmed said.
An EC team led by Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda held a two-hour meeting with top officials of law-enforcement and other government agencies ahead of Gazipur and Khulna city corporations polls to be held on May 15.
