EC increases compensation for families of dead election officials

The EC has increased compensation for the families of all election officials who have died on duty since the Dec 30 polls to Tk 1.0 million each.

Election Commission (EC) Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed spoke to the media about the development on Thursday, as per a bdnews24.com report.

The families of the eight officials killed during the Upazila polls in Rangamati's Baghaichhari have been given Tk 505,000 each, he said.

"But the EC believes that the amount is inadequate and has therefore decided to increase it to Tk 1.0 million each for the families of election officials who have died on duty since the national elections," he said.

Election officials who are afflicted with physical disabilities due to accidents or any other reason will receive a maximum of Tk 400,000 while those suffering from serious injuries or disfigurement will get a maximum of Tk 200,000, he said.

Seven election officials were killed in an attack at Baghaichhari in Rangamati during Upazila council polls last month. Another official injured in the attack died in hospital on April 9.
