DU student rape: Protesters block Shahbagh, case filed

Dhaka University (DU) protesters blocked the key Shahbagh intersection on Monday demanding punishment of people involved in the rape of a female student of the university in the capital's Kurmitola on Sunday night.

Traffic movement came to a grinding halt at the intersection after 12 at noon when the students took position there.They kept the roads blocked for about two hours.

Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) Vice-President Nurul Haque Nur also took part in a protest rally on the campus and demanded maximum punishment to the rapists.

According to Cantonment Police Station's officer-in-charge (OC) Kazi Sahan Haque, the victim's father already filed a case over the incident.

Efforts were now on to locate the scene and identify and arrest the accused, the OC said.

Describing the incident, the victim's friends said she got down at Kurmitola from the university bus around 7:00pm only to be picked up by an unidentified man who rendered her unconscious and raped her.

She regained consciousness around 10pm and contacted them, they said.

The victim was admitted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) around midnight.

On information, the DU proctor, teachers and students visited her.

DMCH Police Outpost's inspecor Bachchu Miah said the girl was hospitalised around 12:45am.

DU proctor AKM Golam Rabbani expressed shock at the incident and said legal actions would be taken.

Protesting against the rape, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL)'s DU unit also staged a human chain in front of the Raju Sculpture on the campus around 3:00am.

Meanwhile, Sifatul Islam, a student of philosophy department, has started a hunger strike in front of the same sculpture protesting against the rape and seeking justice for the victim.
