Elections to Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) are in progress with drastically low presence of voters in the early hours.

In the first two hours of the voting, less than five per cent of voters cast their votes.

The FE correspondents found such scenario after visiting eight polling centres under the DNCC areas.

The centres are at East Rampura Hight School, Red Leaf International School, Hate Khori International School, Knowledge Syndicate International School, Al Furqan English High School and World View International School.

Of the schools, East Rampura Hight School and World View International School each have two voting centres while the four others each have one polling centre.

Talking to the FE, the presiding officer of the polling centre number 722 at East Rampura Hight School Mamun Mollah said there are 2337 voters registered under the station but their presence is very poor.

"Only three per cent of the voters exercised their voting rights in the first two hours. I hope the number will rise as the day progresses," he said.

Just when the FE correspondents were talking with the presiding officer, Awami League-backed councillor candidate Haji Md Liakat Ali came to the centre to cast his vote.

When asked about the atmosphere, the councillor candidate said the election to his 22-ward is progressing peacefully.

"Yes, the presence of voters is quite low but it will start increasing after the lunch hour when people will start arriving at the stations," he added.
