Detective Branch of police interrogated three leaders of quota reform protests on Monday after they delivered an ultimatum to dismiss the cases over their recent demonstrations.
The Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Odhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad, the organising body of recent quota protests, held a press conference in front of the Dhaka University Central Library at 11am on Monday.
During the press conference they stated all cases over the clashes on campus and the attack on the vice-chancellor’s house must be dismissed or the protesters would take to the streets once again.
Hasan Al Mamun, convener of the body, claimed the detectives detained their three joint conveners; Nurul Haque Nur, Farooq Hasan and Muhammad Rashed Khan; from the Dhaka University area immediately after the press conference.
However, Detective Branch Police Joint Commissioner Abdul Baten said, "They were brought in for questioning as part of the investigation and were released."
The three had been taken in order to scrutinise reports of violence during the protests, the police official said.
“They were called to scrutinise video footage from the attack on the VC’s house for the purposes of the investigation. They have been released,” he said.
According to bdnews24.com, quota reform protest leaders delivered an ultimatum to dismiss 'the baseless cases' filed against thousands of protesters within the next two days.”
“If not, the students will once again take to the streets in protest,” they said.
They claimed that regular students were the leaders of these protests.
“Do not harass the protesters. We will resume our demonstrations if they are harassed,” they said.
