Decline in child marriage will reduce child mortality: Minister

The maternal mortality rate will come down in the country if there is a decline in child marriage, said Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque on Tuesday.

The minister said it while speaking at a press conference at the secretariat arranged on the occasion of Safe Motherhood Day, according to a report on UNB.

"Emergency maternity services have been introduced in 59 hospitals, 68 Mother and Child Welfare Centres and 132 upazila health complexes as per the directive of the Prime Minister," he said.

The Safe Motherhood Day is observed in the country each year since 1997 aiming to create awareness among people about the health of mothers, Zahid Maleque added.

Currently, the maternal mortality rate in the country is 172 per 100,000 while it was 176 in 2017, he said.
