Deaths of drug suspects in ‘gunfights’ reach 150 in 34 days

Deaths of drug suspects have risen to 150 in alleged gunfights across the country since the anti-narcotics drive started on May 15.

Of them, 113 people were killed in the gun battles with law enforcers and 37 others in those with their rivals in the 34 days ending Monday.

The latest drug suspect died in a reported gunfight with rivals at Chengutia of Abhaynagar upazila under Jashore in the early hours of this day, UNB reported.

The victim has been identified as Shahidul Islam, 38, son of Nur Islam of Buikara village in the upazila. He was named in multiple cases.

Acting on a tip-off that two groups of drug traders were exchanging gunfire in the area, Abhaynagar Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sheikh Goni Mia said, a team of police rushed at around 4:00 am.

He said they found the bullet-hit body of Shahidul, one pipe gun, two bullets and 120 pieces of Yaba tablets on the scene and recovered those.

Shahidul was wanted in several cases, OC Goni Mia added.

Human rights organisations have condemned the deaths, terming them as ‘extrajudicial killings’.
