Deaths from landslides decreased in 2019: BFSCD

Number of victims in landslides decreased drastically across the country in 2019 compared to that of 2018, according to official data.

At least, 13 people died and 28 others injured in 2019 in 17 incidents, according to a data of Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defense (BFSCD).

In 2018, landslides claimed 45 lives while 32 others were injured in 21 incidents.

In Chattogram division, 11 people were killed and 28 others injured in 15 incidents, the department’s data showed.

In Sylhet, two people were killed in one incident.

In 2017, at least 91 people were killed and 52 others injured in 52 incidents in hill collapses across the country.

11 landslide incidents claimed at least seven lives in 2016, while in 2015 the number of deaths was 39 in 23 incidents.

Incidents of hill collapses are common in the country.  Landslide usually occurs in hilly areas of Chattogram division due to the heavy rainfall, according to Bangladesh Meteorological Department
