CU BCL calls indefinite strike

A fraction of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) of Chittagong University (CU) unit on Tuesday called a blockade for an undefined period, protesting the arrest of their fellow men and demanding resignation of Proctor Mohammad Ali Asgar Chowdhury.

The activists of the ruling party-backed students’ wing were also locked into a clash with the law enforcers as they restricted the BCL men while trying to lock the proctor's office in the morning.

The BCL leaders and activists also vandalised at least ten buses of the campus.

Police fired at least 6 rounds of tear shells and charged baton to disperse the BCL men, leaving several injured.

Iqbal Hossain Tipu, former publication and publicity secretary of BCL, said they called the blockade protesting the arrest of their fellow men from Shah Jalal and Shah Amanat Residential Halls and also demanding resignation of the proctor.

He alleged that police tortured the students and arrested their fellow men while they raided the halls in the early hour, reports UNB.

Although blockade was enforced, all classes and examinations were held as per routine while the BCL men shut down the shuttle train service of the university in the morning, students said.

Earlier on Monday, police conducted the raid at residential halls as a fraction of BCL leaders and activists were locked into clashes over establishing supremacy in the campus.
