UP chairman gets seven days in jail for digging pond illegally

A mobile court has sentenced a union parishad chairman to seven-day imprisonment for digging a pond in a piece of cultivable land in Tiorkuri Beel of Durgapur upazila in Rajshahi.

The convict is Riazul Islam, chairman of Deluabari Union Parishad.

A mobile court led by Executive Magistrate and Assistant Commissioner (land) Samar Kumar Paul conducted the drive in the area on Saturday evening and sentenced him, said the magistrate.

Earlier the authorities concerned warned the UP chairman to stop digging the pond, but he did not refrain and violated the law, UNB reported quoting the magistrate.
