Sylhet clash leaves two dead, several injured

Two youths were shot dead and 10 others were injured in a clash between residents of two villages over a disputed land at Shahutikar village in Goainghat upazila on Saturday morning.

The deceased were identified as Ali Ahmed, 25, son of Abdul Jalil of Mitrimahal village in the upazila and Romel Ahmed, 30, son of Azizul Islam of the same village.

Witnesses said the clash ensued after Jamal Ahmed and his supporters of Bahar village and people of Abdus Sobhan of adjacent Mitrimahal village locked into an altercation over the construction of a mosque wall on Friday afternoon.

A clash ensued between the supporters of Jamal and Sobhan around 7 am on Saturday that left 12 people, including Ali and Romel with bullet injuries.

The injured were taken to Osmani Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared Ali and Romel dead, said an UNB report.

Police recovered some local weapons from the spot and detained some villagers, said officer-in-charge of Goainghat Police Station Deloar Hossain.
