Two accused gold smugglers put on five-day remand

A Chattogram court on Monday granted a five-day remand for two suspected gold smugglers in a case filed over the recovery of 600 gold bars from Joralganj in Mirsarai upazila.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Shahidullah Kaisar passed the order when the investigation officer of the case sought a 10-day remand to interrogate them over the gold seizure, reports UNB.

Those remanded are Karim Khan Kali, 34, and Rakib, 34.

Court Inspector Bijon Kumar Barua said police on Sunday arrested the duo along with the gold bars worth around Tk 2.6 million from Sonapahar of Joralganj. Police also seized a white Pajero jeep from the spot.

Another 100 gold bars were seized in a separate drive in the city's CRB area on Sunday noon while two people and a private car.

Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police of the district Nure Alam Mina vowed to unearth the gold smuggling racket.

He came up with the remarks at a press conference at the Police Lines conference hall.

The godfathers of the gold smugglers will be brought to book after identifying each of them, the SP said.

Additional Police Super (South) Afruzul Haque Tutul, Additional Police Super (North) Moshiuddoula Reza and Additional Police Superintendent (DSB) were, among others, present.
