A teenager, who was arrested over an alleged theft, died in police custody in Brahmanbaria, according to his family.

The victim, Russell Miah, 19, was the son of Robi Miah from Madhapara area in the municipal town. He was a night guard of the city centre branch of Shahjalal Islami Bank.

He died around 3 am on Thursday while he was undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Police detained Russell three days ago and he reportedly died in the police custody, said his elder brother Liton Miah.

His uncle Khabir Miah claimed that he was severely beaten, before he jumped from the rooftop to avoid police torture.

Police detained him with other workers for questioning on charges of theft in Swapnalok Fashion House located in the same area on Monday night, according to police.

Denying the allegation of torture, Iqbal Hossain, additional superintendent of police, said police arrested Russell and others by viewing CCTV footage installed in parts of the city. “He jumped from the third floor of the building around 9 am as he tried to flee.”

Russell was taken to the DMCH where he died hours later.

Brahmanbaria Police Station Chief Ziaul Haque said the police opened an investigation into the matter, reports bdnews24.
