A 17-year-old boy died hours after being released from police custody in Nalitabari upazila early Monday.

The victim has been identified as Biswajit Chandra Dey, son of Bidhan Chandra Dey of Uttar Bazar area in the upazila.

Biswajit’s sister Seuly said a police team detained his brother along with some hemp from Uttar Bazar area around 9:00pm and released him around 11:00pm, reports UNB.

Later, he died around 1:00am after he had taken to Nalitabari Upazila Health Complex as he complained of chest pain.

Demanding punishment of the involved policemen, angry locals brought out a protest procession with the body of the teenage boy at Uttar Bazar intersection in the morning and vandalised the office of ASP (Nalitabari Circle).

Contacted, Jahangir Alam, Assistant Superintendent of Police (Nalitabari Circle), denied the allegation of any kind of torture on the boy in the police custody.

“The boy was detained at night but released hours after his detention. He was not tortured,” he said.
