Rape accused killed in 'gunfight' with RAB

A rape accused was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Amirabad in Lohagara upazila of Chattogram early Monday.

The deceased has been identified as Saiful Islam, owner of a local coaching centre, and an accused in a case filed over violating a Class-IX student. Saiful had been on the run since the case was filed against him two weeks back.

Tipped off, a team of RAB conducted a drive in the area at around 4:30am, said Md Mashkur Rahman, assistant director (media) of RAB-7.

Sensing presence of the elite force members, Saiful opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back, triggering a gunfight.

After the gunfight, the RAB team discovered Saiful's dead body from the spot.

On April 12, Saiful allegedly tied up the hands and legs of the girl and violated her in absence of the family members.

A case was then filed against him.
