A suspected pirate was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Char Omed in Companyganj upazila early Friday.

On a tip-off, a team of RAB-7 from Chittagong conducted a drive in the area early Friday, said AKM Zahirul Haq, additional superintendent of Noakhali police.

Sensing law enforcement presence, the pirates opened fire on RAB, prompting them to retaliate that triggered a gunfight.

The deceased was identified as Ibrahim Majhi, 42, hailing from Sandwip upazila of Chittagong district.

At one stage, Ibrahim was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while the others managed to flee the scene, reports UNB.

RAB added, the killed pirate was wanted in a number of cases filed with Companyganj and Sandwaip Police Stations.
