A suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight between his cohorts and police on Hemayetpur-Amtoil road in Gangni upazila early Wednesday.

The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.

Acting on a tip-off, when a gang of robbers were gathering at a banana orchard near Amtoil-Manikdia road, a team of police went there around 2:30 am, said Harendranath Sarker, officer-in-charge of Gangni Police Station.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the robbers opened fire to law enforcers, prompting a retaliation that triggered a gunfight.

At one stage, a member of the robber gang caught in the line of fire and sustained bullet injuries while the others managed to flee the scene.

Later, police took the injured to Gangni Upazila Health Complex where the doctors declared him dead, reports UNB.

Two policemen were injured in the gunfight, said the OC.

Police also recovered four bombs, two sharp weapons and a shutter gun from the spot.
