Man gets life in prison for college boy murder

A Pirojpur court has sentenced a man to life term imprisonment for murdering a college boy in the district’s Mathbaria upazila in 2006.

Additional District and Sessions Judge S M Zillur Rahman handed down the verdict on Monday acquitting another five accused.

The convicted man was Rafiqul Islam Raja, a resident of Sonakhali village.

The court also fined him Tk 10,000, in case of failure to pay the fine, he will have to suffer six more months in jail, says a UNB report.

According to the prosecution, Jahidul Islam Jasim (18), son of Hemayet Mrida at Badurtola village in Sapleja union in Mathbaria upazila and a student of class XI of Rustam Ali Farazi College, bought a mobile phone from Raja.

The two were at loggerheads since then as Raja did not give him the charger of the mobile set.

Later, in October 26, 2006, Raja beat Jasim and hit his head with a stick, leaving him critically injured. Jasim succumbed to his wounds at the hospital after two hours.

Following the incident, a case was filed with Mathbaria Police Station against six people.
