Haji Salim appeals against 10-year imprisonment in a graft

Awami League leader Haji Mohammad Salim has appealed to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court for acquittal following a High Court verdict that confirmed his 10-year imprisonment in a graft case.

Salim is currently undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) after he landed in jail on Sunday following his conviction in the corruption case.

Confirming the matter, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) counsel Khurshid Alam Khan told the Financial Express (FE) that the convicted Haji Salim has also applied for bail through his lawyer Sayeed Ahmed Raza.

On the charges of having wealth beyond means and concealing the information, the national anti-graft watchdog agency prosecuted Salim during the military-backed caretaker government in 2007.

In 2008, a special court in Dhaka convicted him to 13 years in imprisonment -- 10 years on the charges of gaining wealth from unknown sources and three years for hiding the information.
