A court has sent a teacher of Dhaka University’s Institute of Business Administration or IBA to jail on charges of raping a woman with whom he had an affair.

Police arrested Khaled Mahmud, an associate professor at the IBA, from Bashundhara area after the husband of the 35-year-old alleged victim started the case at Bhatara Police Station on Wednesday night.

Shahidul Islam, the lawyer for Khaled, claimed in a petition seeking his client’s bail that the IBA teacher did not know the alleged victim.

Police Inspector Shihab Uddin produced Khaled before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrates Court of Dhaka on Thursday.

Metropolitan Magistrate Shahinoor Rahman denied Khaled’s bail and ordered him to be sent into jail.

According to the case dossier, Khaled had been in an extramarital relationship with the woman and raped her later.

An official of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Gulshan Zone said that Khaled’s wife is a daughter of a top police officer.

She also started a case against her husband on charges of demanding dowry at the same police station on Thursday night, the police official said and requested anonymity as he was not authorised to speak to the media over the case.

“Many know the alleged victim of rape to be a friend of the teacher. Her husband is a businessman,” he said.

Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Md Akhtaruzzaman was quoted by bdnews24.com as saying that he had heard about the incident.

“We will take action following the rules once we get information,” he said.
