An activist of Bangladesh Chhatra League, student wing of the ruling Awami League, on Wednesday stabbed a student at Rajshahi University allegedly for protesting the harassment of his female friend.
The injured student was identified as Saiful Islam Ridoy, a masters' student of RU marketing department.
Witnesses said BCL RU unit vice president Saddam Hossain's followers Hamza, Papon and another activist teased Ridoy's female friend in the evening while they were walking beside the third science building of the university.
As her friends protested the assault, the BCL activists went heavy upon them, witnesses also added.
The trio of BCL activists stabbed him in front of the university second science building at 8:30 pm while he was returning to his hall after accompanying her female friend to her hall, Ridoy said.
Later, he was taken to the university medical centre from where he was transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
However, other students caught Hamza while his two other associates managed to flee.
Meanwhile, BCL leader Saddam Hossain was seen saving Hamza from police. He snatched Hamza from the police and sent him to the university medical centre. He also barred Hamza from speaking when journalists approached, reports UNB from Rajshahi University.
Contacted, Saddam Hossain said that Hamza was known to him earlier, but denied the allegation of saving him. "When I was assured that Hamza was lying on the ground, I helped him to medical centre for his treatment," he added.
