VGF rice seized in Faridpur

The local administration seized 60 sacks of rice meant for distribution among the ultra poor under the vulnerable group feeding (VGF) programme ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr in Faridpur district.

The sacks were seized from a union parishad complex in Faridpur Sadar upazila on Monday, reports UNB.

Faridpur Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Provangshu Shom Mohan said 3,080 cards were issued for Krishnanagar union. Each cardholder was supposed to get 10 kg of rice before Eid.

However, 2,700 cardholders received the VGF rice before the auspicious occasion while rice meant for others remained undistributed, leading to resentment among the locals, he said.

On information, local administration officials went to the union parishad on Monday and seized the rice.

UP chairman Golam Mostafa and its secretary allegedly kept the rice for embezzling those.

However, Golam Mostafa denied the allegation, saying the rice could not be distributed as the remaining cardholders did not turn up for taking those.

The UNO also said they were investigating the matter.
