BOGURA: A number of unmanned and unauthorised level crossings in the district pose risk of serious accidents.
There are a total of four level crossings in Bogura Sadar upazila while three in Gabtoli, two each in Nashratpur, Talora and Kahaloo, one each in Adamdighi, Altafnagar, Shukhanpukur, Bhelurpara and Shonatola.
During a recent visit, this correspondent found no gateman at several level crossings while trains are running. As a result, commuters and pedestrians especially children and old men are facing the risk of injury and death.
Around 40-km portion of Shantahar-Sonatola rail route in the district remains unsafe for commuters and pedestrians, sources said.
Sabgram, Puran Bogura, Biddutnagar, Pachpir, Chelopara, Shahardighi, Syed Ahmed College station and Shitlai level crossings are very risky. Passengers of three-wheeler, vans and auto-rickshaws often become the victims of accidents.
Sources in railway station said there are thirteen railway stations namely Shantahar, Adamdighi, Nashratpur, Altafnagar, Talora, Panchpir, Kahaloo, Bogura, Gabtoli, Sukhanpukur, Syed Ahmed College, Bonerpara and Sonatola in the district.
However, the authorities concerned have yet to take necessary steps to resolve the problem. As a result, the pedestrians are passing through these unmanned level crossings and becoming the victims of accidents, locals said.
A number of people were crushed under the wheels of trains and several others got injured in accidents at unsafe level crossings during the last few years.
The local people also demanded the authority concerned take necessary measures to make these level crossings safer for both the commuters and pedestrians.
