SIRAJGANJ, Jan 28:  Tomato cultivation creates a noticeable income generation for the poor and marginal peasants of the district this season.

A total of 700 hectares of land have been under tomato farming in the area. Growers have stated harvesting the fruit from the last week of November.

Tomato cultivation is increasing in the district as the growers get repeated bumper production and good price, officials of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said.

They said tomato farming is profitable due to high demand. Growers can cultivate it every year.

In a recent visit the correspondent found various hybrid tomato varieties including Udoyan, Unnoyan, Safal, Mangal Raja and Kanak.

Sub-assistance agriculture officer Azizur Rahman said this year per hectare production rate is 2.0 tonnes to 3.0 tonnes.  He said, favourable weather condition, proper nursing, absence of pest attack and other diseases helped achieving the bumper production of the item.

Deputy director of DAE Md Arshad Ali said tomato farming is increasing in the district as more cultivators show their interest in growing it.
