Three more die of dengue as outbreak rages across Bangladesh

Three people have died from Dengue in Dhaka and Khulna amid the Eid holidays as the mosquito-borne disease continues to wreak havoc across Bangladesh, reports bdnews24.com.

On Tuesday morning, a five-year-old child named Samiya died during treatment at Dhaka’s Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital.

Samiya, a resident of Agargaon Taltola, was admitted to the hospital with the viral fever two days ago, said Suhrawardy Hospital’s Deputy Director Mamun Morshed.

“The child was a shock syndrome patient. She died at 06.30 am this morning (Tuesday).”

In another fatal case of dengue in Dhaka, Mahbubullah Hoque, 35, died during treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital (BSMMUH).

He passed away around 10:00 am on Tuesday after being admitted to the hospital in critical condition on Monday afternoon, said Dr Nazmul Karim, additional director of BSMMUH.

Mahbubullah, the manager of the state-owned Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration & Production Company Limited, was receiving treatment for the viral illness in the ICU before his demise, he added.

A total of 140 patients are being treated for the mosquito-borne disease at BSMMUH, according to Dr Nazmul.

Another dengue patient, Mohammad Russell, 32, passed away while undergoing treatment for the disease at Khulna Medical College College Hospital on Tuesday, said Partho Protim Debnath, assistant registrar of the hospital's department of medicine.

Russell, who hailed from Gopalganj's Kotalipara Upazila, returned to his country home after falling ill in Dhaka where he worked as a cleaner at Ramna Park.

After being diagnosed with dengue, he was admitted to Gopalganj Hospital a few days ago, said ASM Abdur Razzak, Khulna's civil surgeon.

He was subsequently transferred to Khulna Medical College Hospital when his condition deteriorated.

The total number of dengue patients hospitalised so far this year has crossed 43,000, including around 25,000 in the first 11 days of August.
