Thousands of people have been suffering extremely in the absence of a concrete bridge over Shimulkandi canal at Mathurapur union under Dhunot upazila of Bogra district for the last few years.
Local people said they are now making do with a makeshift bamboo bridge but it is dangerous for children and elderly people.
They said they several times informed the authorities concerned about their miseries in writing but it did not bear any fruits at all.
During the election, local Union Parishad chairman candidates promise to set up the bridge but they forget it after the election, they lamented.
Many parents of Amdanipur, Rajarpur, Shimulkandi, Chhatiany, Rampura, Konagati, Randila, Chalkdakatia are also worried about the fate of their children crossing the bridge twice a day.
“I always feel afraid of sending my children over the bridge as the bridge shakes terribly when people walk over it,”” said Muslim uddin, a headmaster of a primary school at Rampura village.
“Over 1000 students depend on the bridge to attend three schools. An accident may happen any time,” he added.
A well-educated person at Rajarpur village, Anarul Islam said, “Many guardians are anxious about sending their children to schools on the other side of the canal.”
Selim Uddin, a vegetable vendor, said he has to spend more money for selling the vegetable item as he needs to go afar every day.
Local conscious people say the authorities should build a concrete bridge immediately, making the communications systems between two sides of the canal in the upazila.
