Tangail farmers profit from green onion

TANGAIL, Dec 09: Early variety of green onion growers of the twelve upazilas of the district are earning a handsome profit by selling their produce, as dry onion price is extremely high at the local kitchen market in the current season.

Sub- assistant Agriculture officer of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Shariful Islam said, green onion farming is profitable. It grows well at all the twelve upazilas of the district.

They are happy with the good production of onion and high market prices, sources in different local markets said.

DAE Tangail sources said this is early variety item of the green onion. The regular one will be harvested later.

In the pricey onion market the early variety of leafy onion brought down the prices in the local market a bit, traders said. 

DAE official's sources said in the current season green onion growers are harvesting their produce before harvesting time was due. The reason behind it was market price was very high at the local markets.

A green onion grower Ashraful islam of village Potol under sadar upazila said, he has cultivated the leafy green onion on his 30 decimal of land in the current current season spending by Tk 2,500.

Another grower Abdur Rahman Miah of village Kashil under Jugni union of the district said he has cultivated green onion on his 45 decimal of land. He said he was expecting a plenteous production of yield and was hoping to earn a handsome profit by selling his produce, he added.

A retail onion trader at Park Moydan Bazaar of the district town said that one kg of green onion was being sold at the local market at Tk 80 to Tk 100.
