SYLHET, Aug 29: Farmers of all the four districts of Sylhet division have been passing busy time in T-Aman cultivation.
T-Aman paddy is the main crop of the region. Growers are expecting to get a bumper yield this season. About 82 per cent of the target has been achieved so far.
In this connection, seedbeds were prepared on 23,820 hectares of land although the target was 20,421 hectares.
So far, 114,475 hectares in Sylhet had been cultivated while it is 89,698 hectares in Moulvibazar, 58,220 hectares in Habiganj and 53,450 hectares in Sunamganj. The total cultivated area includes 270,719 hectares of high yielding varieties and 45,124 hectares of local varieties.
The division's target of rice production is set at 973,793 tonnes.
Of the total target area, 138,335 hectares would be in Sylhet to produce 3,197,832 tonnes of rice, 96,246 hectares in Moulvibazar for producing 2,65,434 tonnes of rice, 75,210 hectares in Habiganj for targeted yield of 2,05,060 tonnes of rice and 74,214 hectares of Sunamganj district for producing 183,517 tonnes of rice.
Farmers in most of the areas had already cultivated about 315,843 hectares of land as yet, informed additional director of DAE, Sylhet division office Md Altabur Rahman on Wednesday afternoon.
The farming is well as yet with a good weather with required rain and sunshine, he added.
During the last year's T-Aman season farming of the crop was also a good one amid favourable weather.
Although the target was a bigger one last year, the crop was cultivated on 375,800 hectares in 4 districts of the division, the official said, per hectare yield stood at about 2.8 tonnes from high yielding varieties and 1.6 metric tonnes from local varieties.
However a total of 387,150 hectares were cultivated last year. The farmers in different areas couldn't recover the flood damages while many others failed replanting their lands due to the longer duration of floods.
Severe and prolonged floods that season had damaged Transplanted Aman crops on 5650 hectares, affecting a total of 43,782 farmers in the region.
