SYLHET, Oct 24: Farmers in Sylhet region have been achieving a good yield of summer tomato for over the last few years.
Chairman of Horticulture Department at Sylhet Agriculture University Prof Dr Md Shahidul Islam said, "We took some special measures to grow the crop as the region is not suitable to tomato and some other vegetables."
"We appreciate the cultivators who helped us and responded in this regard", said Mr Islam, adding, "Growers are now getting a good return."
The researcher said, "We had to select a proper and high-yielding seeds, graft plants properly and took special care until harvest."
He further said growers need to use organic fertilisers and dolomite (lime) in soil. They have to grow this tomato in higher land.
Abdul Mukit of Nabiganj cultivated BARI Tomato-8 in 15 decimals of land.
He said he has already harvested around 2,700 kg of tomato and expecting to harvest 3000 kg more in weeks.
The tomato is selling at Tk 60 per kg in the local markets, the grower said.
Like Mukit, Nizam Uddin of Sreemangal upazila and Mehraj Mia of Nabiganj, are also working for the research programme of SAU and making a good profit.
