Sylhet growers complete Boro harvest safely

SYLHET, June 02: At last farmers of the Sylhet region completed Boro harvest. Growers and officials concerned are happy as a safe harvest has been managed this season.
Some 481,521 hectares of land were brought under the farming of Boro in the division this year with the production target of 19,26,084 tonnes.
Additional director of DAE, Sylhet divisional office, Md Altabur Rahman said, "We are happy as cultivators have already completed Boro harvest.
For averting possible rain and floods, the farmers were suggested for cultivating short-duration varieties like BRRI-28 and BRRI-29 and they also responded to it, the official added.
Besides, the government supplied seeds of these varieties through the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC). About thousands of farmers were given inputs including fertilisers and seeds in assistance as they had lost the crop last year, he further said.
The official further said per hectare yield in the region was estimated at 4.0 tonnes.
The local varieties like Khoiaboro, Tepi, Rata and Gochi while the hybrid ones- SL8H, Hera and Jagoron- are popular among the growers in the region. High yielding varieties like BRRI-28, 29 and 45 are also cultivated in the area, the DAE official added.
