Sylhet Aus farmers eye good yield

SYLHET, Sept 05: Aus harvest is nearing to end in all the four districts of Sylhet division.

So far 152,220 hectares of land have already been harvested, an official informed on Wednesday.

It includes 148,106 hectares if high yielding varieties and 3808 hectares of local while only 306 hectares of hybrid variety.

The total area however includes 50,397 hectares in Sylhet, 46,739 hectares in Moulvibazar, 41,944 hectares in Habiganj and 13,140 hectares in Sunamganj district.

The total yield had been estimated at 387,303 tonnes of rice from the said harvested land, the official added.

Additional director of the DAE, Sylhet division Md Altabur Rahman said, comparing to the other regions, farmers here in Sylhet start Aus farming a little late. This is why harvest also gets delayed.

The farmers this season cultivated 170,077 hectares, about 97 per cent of the targeted 174,824 hectares, the DAE official informed.

 Of the total 60,427 hectares are in Sylhet, 49,440 hectares in Moulvibazar, 46,720 hectares in Habiganj and 13,490 hectares in Sunamganj.

The DAE in the last year had revised the division's target from its initial area of 133,028 hectares to 176,919. However, the total Aus paddy cultivated area stood at 170, 782 hectares that season.

The official further said under the incentive programme this year, 30,000 bighas of land were cultivated against the last year's 25,700 bighas.

It includes 9,000 bighas in each of Sylhet, Moulvibazar and Habiganj districts and 3000 bighas of land in Sunamganj district.

The total amount includes, Tk 159,75000 for each of Sylhet, Moulvibazar and Habiganj districts while Tk 4792,500 is for Sunamganj district.

For each bigha land a farmer was supplied 5.0 kg seed, 20 kg of urea, 10 kg of DAP, 10 kg of MoP fertilisers, the source informed.

Besides, Tk 11641,115 was spent as incentive for the selected grassroots farmers of three districts for cultivating Nerika paddy.

It includes, Tk 1887,750 for 900 farmers of Sylhet, Tk 2517,000 for 1200 in Moulvibazar and Tk 7236,375 for 3450 in Habiganj.

The amount was spent for seed, fertilisers and others' assistance. Besides, separate amount was given for clearing weeds, the official added.

According to the reports from districts till Wednesday, the per hectare yield of rice is 3.0 tonnes in Hybrid while it is 2.56 tonnes in high yielding varieties and 1.3 tonnes in local verities, the official informed.
