BOGURA, Jan 12: Surplus carrot output has brought smile to hundreds of farmers in Bogura region.
Farmers of Dupchanchia, Kahaloo, Adamdighi, Sonatola, Sharikandi, Gabtoly, Sibganj, Serpur, Nandigram, Shajahanpur, Dhunot and Sadar upazilas have shown more interest during sowing seeds as they had made good profit investing little amount of money.
Now, they are passing busy time from very early in the morning to noon to harvest the crop to sell them in the kitchen markets. Carrot growers of the district hope to become self-reliant this season.
According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office source said, the farmers of the district have cultivated the crop after taking suggestions from the authority concerned aiming at good profit within a short time.
Farmers of the region have sowed the crops in the last week of October to first week of November after tilling the soil. They keep the seed in rows and irrigate to make it sprout easily. Whenever they see the tender leafves emerging, they use both organic and chemical fertilisers and water in the sapling.
Besides, they use pesticide to keep the leaf fresh and healthy at the day time. In a recent visit at Mohastah haat kitchen market this correspondent found each kg of carrot is being sold at Tk 30 to 35 in the retail market while Tk 25 to 88 in the wholesale market across the district.
"I have cultivated carrot on four decimal of land this season spending Tk 2,100 paying for quality seed, fertiliser and labour costs," said farmer Anukul Barmon under Adamdighi upazila. "I have sold some carrot at Tk 30 per kg in the local Asuli haat on Thursday." he added.
DAE official said we have provided all sort of necessary agri-input among the farmers to make the programme a grand success. The farmers are happy over fair market price this season, he added.
