Stakeholder consultation of Artemia4Bangladesh held in Cox’s Bazar

A stakeholder consultation meeting of the Artemia4Bangladesh project was hosted by WorldFish Bangladesh at Long Beach Hotel in Cox's Bazar on 18 May 2022 with the support of the European Union.

Syed Md Alamgir, deputy director (admin) at Department of Fisheries, presided over the meeting while Dario Trombetta, delegation of the European Union (EU) to Bangladesh, was the chief guest, according to a statement.

Members of the EU delegation Laura Chechi and Shabnam Ishrat, BSCIC Cox’s Bazar deputy general manager Zafarul Iqbal Bhuiyan, Cox’s Bazar district fisheries officer SM Khalekuzzaman and Shrimp Hatcheries Association of Bangladesh joint secretary Shahidul Alam  also attended the meeting.

Dr Meezanur Rahman, technical team leader, highlighted the project’s progress. He said, "Artemia are now used as live feed for shrimp/fish species and Artemia brine shrimp kebab has been tasted as a human food at field level and among stakeholders, partners and fisheries department."

Mr Trombetta said, “Artemia farming will emerge as an innovation towards green transition and a climate-smart alternative livelihood option for salt farmers.” 

Mr Alamgir expressed full support for the Artemia4Bangladesh project, saying that Artemia would be an asset to Bangladesh and its economy.

Farmers need to sustain the project. Since Artemia is a high-protein food, it needs to be utilised, he adds.

Artemia farmers, fish producers and hatchery owners took part in the event.
