Spinach growers happy with fair market price

JOYPURHAT, Feb 03: Spinach growers in the district are happy over the bumper output and fair market price of the produce.

Sources said, spinach farming is popular among the growers in the winter. Many people in the area have attained solvency by growing the leafy vegetable adopting modern agricultural techniques. Local markets have been flooded with newly-harvested spinach.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office source said peasants of Kalai, Akkelpur, Pachbibi, Khetlal and Sadar upazilas have applied the latest vegetable production technologies for growing spinach.

"I have cultivated spinach on 33 decimals of land this season spending Tk 19,500," said farmer Arbindu Kumar Das under Panchbibi upazila of the district.

"I have made a profit over Tk 45,000 this season and am expecting to earn Tk 23,000 more", the grower added.

DAE officials said spinach growers should use modern technologies for production, preservation and utilisation of their produce.

Deputy Director of DAE Md Meftahul Bari said the farmers are making three to four times profit growing spinach. Cultivators can harvest the vegetable after 30 to 40 days of its cultivation, he added.
