GOPALGANJ, Aug 05: Farmers of Ragunathpur union under Gopalganj Sadar of the district have been benefiting from the cultivation of snake gourd.
According to the officials at the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Gopalganj, a total of 146 hectares of land have been brought under snake gourd cultivation with the production target of 1,364 tonnes.
Of the total area, some 80 hectares of land are under Sadar upazila.
Prodip Halder, sub-assistant agriculture officer, Ragunathpur union, said cultivation of snake gourd 'Ruhini' origin is profitable.
It requires low cost but ensures high return, he added.
The official further said snake gourd farming is expanding in the district due to high market demand.
Uttam Biswas of Digarkul village said he is growing snake gourd on one acre of land this season spending Tk 28,000.
The farmer said he has already made a profit of Tk 50,000 and is expecting to earn Tk 40,000 more if the weather condition remains favourable.
Md Mizanur Rahman, upazila agriculture officer, Gopalganj Sadar, said farming of Ruhini variety snake gourd is gaining popularity across the district.
