Vegetable growers of Rangpur are apprehensive about the expected yield of their produce this season owing to lack of rainfall.
The region has not been witnessing rain for over three weeks as a result the cultivation of different varieties of vegetable is facing severe setback across the district.
Tota Mia, a brinjal grower of Paschim Madrain village under Gangachara upazila said they have been facing difficulties this season in farming vegetable because of dearth of rain. Even rainfall was not adequate during rainy season, he also said.
Badiar Rahman a vegetable grower of Palichara area of Rangpur Sadar told this correspondent that he is frustrated due to lack of adequate rainfall this season.
He cultivated leafy vegetables on his land but became disappointed to witness low output and poor quality of his produce, he added.
Expressing disappointment a good number of vegetable cultivators said rain is essential during rainy season for good output of vegetables but the region saw scanty rainfall during the season.
No rainfall and hot spell are causing serious harm to vegetable cultivation across the district, they said. Due to adverse situation production of the crop may decline this season, growers apprehended.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE)) Rangpur official sources said the region is well-known for vegetable farming as vegetables are grown abundantly here.
But this season the cultivation of the crop is being hindered on account of lack of rainfall. Many cultivators are supplying irrigation water to the vegetable fields with the hope to get expected production, sources added.
