NATORE, May 28: Red spinach cultivation has brought smile on the faces of grassroots growers in the district this season.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) office sources, red spinach cultivation is expanding across the area for low production cost, good market price and high profit.
Moreover, repeated abundant yield encourages the new growers to bring more land under the farming of the leafy vegetable.
This season, some 400 hectares of land were come under the production of the vegetable whereas it was some 230 hectares last year.
Favourable weather and timely supply of necessary agri-input helped boost the yield this year, sub-assistant agriculture officer of DAE Abul Basar.
"We insist the farmers to expand the production of the item", the official further said.
"Farmers can grow some 17 to 20 maunds of red spinach from a bigha of land if the proper farming method is followed," said farmer Abdul Mannan of Shingra upazila.
During a visit to different village area in the district, this correspondent saw local markets have been flooded with the newly-harvested fresh red spinach. Growers are also happy over the production.
Babul Hossain of Sadar upazila said, "I have cultivated red spinach on three decimals of land this year spending Tk 2,300. I made a profit of Tk 5,000."
"I would be able to earn Tk 12,000 more from the sale of the vegetable till the end of the season", he further said.
Deputy Director of DAE Rafiqul Islam said cultivation of red spinach is increasing in the district every season for good market price.
