RCC to generate fuel, biogas, manure from wastes

Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) has taken a decision in principle to generate fuel, biogas and bio-fertiliser from wastes.

The corporation signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with an American company at City Bhaban conference hall in Rajshahi on Wednesday evening.

RCC Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton and chairman of West Technology LLC Limited Dr Moin Uddin signed the memorandum on behalf of their respective sides.

Chief executive officer of the company Dr Anjuman Shelly, former pro-vice-chancellor of Rajshahi University Prof Mamnunul Keramat, RCC Chief Executive Officer Shah Mumin, Secretary Rejaul Karim, Chief Engineer Ashraful Haque and Superintending Engineer Khandaker Khairul Bashar were present at the ceremony.

Speaking on the occasion, Mayor Liton hoped that Rajshahi will be the role model of new industry upon successful implementation of the project by the next two and a half years.

He said the existing polythene waste has become a threat to the public health. So, the venture will be very much effective towards protecting environment from a further degradation caused by polythene waste.

Liton said the city corporation will extend all possible support for a successful implementation of the project. According to the signed agreement, RCC will provide land and supply garbage and wastes.

Dr Moin Uddin told the function that one litre diesel can be produced from polythene waste at a cost of only Tk 25 in Bangladesh perspective.

He added that in the present world context, polythene is a serious threat to environment. But, the wastes can be used for the country’s prosperity through a proper processing, BSS reports.

Bangladeshi-born American scientist Dr Moin Uddin is the technology innovator of manufacturing fuel and fertiliser from polythene waste.
