Rangpur growers attaining financial solvency from banana cultivation


RANGPUR, Sept 27: A good number of people are attaining financial solvency by growing banana in different areas of the district.
Growers are bringing more lands under the farming of the tasty fruit due to high market demand and good profit.
At least eight varieties of banana, including Malbhog, Sagor, Sabri, Champa and Kancha Kola are produced in the district.
Nazmul Islam a banana grower of Charan village under Mithapukur upazila told FE he has been farming bananas on two bighas of land for the past five years. He can earn around Tk 60,000 to Tk 70,000 from its sale per year, he also said.
Besides, its farming is also on the rise in char areas. Nazmul a farmer of Chatra village under Pirganj upazila said they used to grow peanuts and sugarcane on char areas but now they cultivate banana and some other crops due to good profit.
Sources said though some of the growers have been farming banana in their homesteads, most of them are cultivating it on their lands as well.
A good number of banana growers expressed their satisfaction over the financial benefit they get by farming it besides cultivating other crops.
According to DAE Rangpur sources commercial cultivation of banana is on the rise in the region owing to huge demands and profit. The soil of many areas under the region is also suitable for its farming. DAE also helps the grower by providing them necessary suggestions and agri- inputs.
