RANGPUR, Nov 21: The farmers of different areas under Rangpur division are attaining financial solvency by cultivating ginger on their lands in recent years.
Due to good profit its farming is on the rise across the region as the peasants are showing more interest in farming the spicy crop in recent years, sources said.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said the atmosphere, moderate rainfall and soil of the region are also congenial to the farming of different varieties of spicy crops including ginger etc.
Ataur Rahman of Khalaspir area at Pirganj upazila in Rangpur district told The Financial Express that he has changed his financial condition by cultivating ginger during the last 5 years. He said earlier he was passing his days in severe financial problem and then he started cultivating ginger instead of other crops and subsequently achieved success.
Tojam Mia, a ginger grower of Basuniapara village under Charaikhola union in Nilphamari Sadar, said he prefers farming spicy crop due to high profit. He cultivated ginger on 40 decimals of land this season. During last few years he has been getting a good yield as well as expected profit from farming of the crop, he also said.
The local growers say that proper training, necessary advices and financial and technical assistances can enhance its production and also expand cultivation of the crop across the region.
The DAE sources said the department has taken various steps to increase production of all sorts of spicy crops to meet the local demand and reduce dependency on import.
DAE has also been providing the farmers with quality seeds, inputs, trainings of proper crops diversification as well as utilisation of latest technologies, sources also said.
Inspired by huge profit the farmers of different areas under the region are showing their interest in cultivation of ginger and other spicy crops in recent years, DAE sources added.
