PABNA, Dec 11: The farmers of Ishwardi upazila under the district are hopeful of making a good profit from the sale of okra as they are getting satisfactory production this season.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), a total of 1,575 hectares of land have been brought under the farming of okra in the whole district. It was cultivated on 525 hectares of land in Ishwardi upazila.
Deputy Director of DAE, Pabna Bibhuti Bhushon Sarkar said char areas are suitable to grow the tasty vegetable. Nearly 20,000 tonnes of okra is likely to be produced this year. The department provided all support necessary to farm the popular item.
Okra is being sold at Tk 50 to Tk 60 per kg in the local market.
Amzad Hossain, a farmer of Char Sara village said he sowed seeds of lady's finger on his 70 bighas of land three months ago. He started harvesting the vegetable a few days ago and having a good production.
DAE officials said okra farming is profitable. Plentiful production of the item has delighted the farmers this season. A good number of cultivators in the area have attained self-reliance by growing the vegetable.
