Peasants attain solvency by growing snake beans

BOGURA, Oct 11: A good number of marginal peasants in the district are attaining financial solvency this season by growing snake bean.

A good number of farmer said snake bean cultivation is profitable as it is grown round the year.

Good yield and fair market prices encourage the farmers to expand the production of the popular vegetable.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office source said the farmers of the district have cultivated the crop on a larger scale as its cultivation proved them more lucrative compare to other crops.

Sub-assistance agriculture officer of DAE Faridur Rahman said, "We have provided all necessary agri-inputs among the grassroots peasants in this connection."

Sources said farmers of Dupchanchia, Kahaloo, Adamdighi, Sherpur, Nandigram, Shajahanpur, Dhunot and Sadar upazilas started the farming from May last.

They began the vegetable from August last.

"I have cultivated snake bean on 12 decimals of land spending Tk 2,900 and started harvesting the item September," said Jalal Uddin of Shibganj upazila.

The vegetable is being sold between Tk 35 to Tk 45 per kg in the Mohasthan Haat, the farmer said.

Deputy Director of DAE Pratul Chandra Sarker said snake bean cultivation ensures good yield.

Grassroots growers make good profit from it every season, he added.
