SYLHET, Dec 06: The Derai Upazila Health Complex in Sunamganj couldn't yet start functioning as 50-bed one even a year after it was upgraded by the health minister.

Over 250,000 people of the remote upazila are not getting minimum health facilities for absence of staff and shortage of physicians and medicine. The government-run institution is still running with its previous 31-bed status.

Health Minister Mohammad Nasim on October 29, 2016 announced immediate appointment of physicians for the health centre. But things remained undone as yet.

As many as 19 posts including that of the physicians remained vacant now. These include health and family planning officer, junior consultants for surgery, anesthetist, gynae, resident medical officer, dental surgeon, nursing supervisor, senior staff nurse, senior nurses, medical technologists, labouratory assistants, one radiologist, cleaners, ward boy, etc.

Sunamganj district's Civil Surgeon Ashutosh Das said, "We have already informed the higher authority about the situation. The ministry has assured us of providing the required staff and others for the hospital."
