Nor'wester damages betel leaf, Boro land in Magura

MAGURA, Apr 15:  Nor'wester panic is yet to be over from Magura villagers. They still get panicked as they recently have strong nor'westers on March 30 and April 11. The nor'weaster caused heavy damage in the district including life and property.

A survey by non-government organisation Palli Prokriti revealed the nor'westers swept over the district caused damage to about 3,500 hectares of Boro paddy, about 100 betel leaf orchards and 2300 houses. At the same time the nor'easter took away two lives. Nor'weaster has caused massive damage in three unions of Magura Sadar. These are: Moghi, Jagdal and Beroil Polita.

Golam Hossein, a farmer of Jagdal village under Sadar upazila, said, "I brought three bighas of land under Boro cultivation this season. But storm damaged my paddy field completely."

Another farmer Bilash Sarker of Shatrijitpur village, said, "My two betel leaf gardens have been damaged by storm. It is difficult for me to repay loan."

Septuagenarian Touab Mian of Sonpur village said recent storm has damaged two rooms of his house.

Jagdal union council chairman Rafiqul Islam said at least 800 houses have been damaged by the storm. "I have got allotment of only 25 bundles of corrugated sheets while requirement is 700 bundles.

Magura DAE official Shahid Reza admitted two times nor'weaster caused heavy damage to Boro paddy and betel leaf.

"We have sent a letter to the higher authority in this connection", he added.

Magura deputy commissioner Md Atikur Rahman said, "We have started distributing relief goods among the victims".
