No fishing in Kaptai for three months

The local administration has imposed a three-month ban on netting, marketing and transporting of carp fishes from the Kaptai Lake in Rangamati starting May 1.

The decision was taken on Tuesday to help breeding and rejuvenate fish stocks in the freshwater lake. The annual fish production from the lake is estimated to be around 20,000 tonnes.

Rangamati Deputy Commissioner AKM Mamunur Rashid, BFDC Manager Asaduzzaman, and fish traders, among others, were present at the meeting.

During this annual ban, an estimated 20,000 fishermen will get food assistance under the vulnerable group feeding programme.

River police will be deployed at key points of the lake and mobile courts will be operated to stop illegal fishing, transporting and marketing.

Those involved in illegal fishing will face legal actions, the speakers warned, reports UNB.
