Mustard harvest starts in Joypurhat district

JOYPURHAT, Feb 08: Thousands of optimistic peasants across the district have started harvesting mustard.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources, the farmers have grown mustard on over 24,000 hectares of land. Meanwhile, they have already harvested the crop of over 13,800 hectares of land.

Rest of the crop will be harvested within a week, the DAE officials added.

"I have cultivated mustard on four bighas of land spending Tk 14,900 this season," said farmer Shahadat Hossain of Nadhupukur village under Akkelpur upazila.

He said he completed the harvest the last week and got around 23 maunds of yield.

Each maund of mustard is being sold at Tk 4,000 to Tk 4,200 in the retail market while the wholesale rate is Tk 3,800 to Tk 3,900. The farmers are seen happy over the good market price.

Deputy director of DAE Sughundranath Roy said, "We have provided all sorts of agri-based support to make the programme a success. The farmers are getting good market price this season."
