Marginal farmers attain financial solvency by farming red spinach

BOGRA, Nov 04: Marginal farmers of the district have attained financial solvency by cultivating red spinach (Lal Shak).
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) official sources, the leafy vegetable has a good demand in the market. Around 200 hectares of land have been brought under the farming of the vegetable this season.
"I have brought some 0.13 acre of land under the vegetable cultivation this season spending Tk 1,200," said farmer Mahbur Rahman of Dawkaola village under Sadar upazila. He also said, "I have already harvested the item of some 0.03 acre of land and sold them at Tk 9,000 to the wholesalers."
Each bundle of fresh vegetable is being sold at Tk 10 to Tk 15 in the local kitchen markets across the district. Wholesalers are now busy in purchasing the newly-harvested vegetable and send those to different kitchen markets in the capital.
Sub-assistance agriculture officer of DAE Faridur Rahman said, "We have provided all necessary agri-input among the farmer this season to make the programme a success. The farmers will bring new cropland under the winter delicacy in the upcoming season."
