RAJSHAHI, July 06: At the end of Bangla month 'Ashar', there is an abundant supply of mango in the markets of the district.
The supply of quality mangoes including Fazli, Langra and Amrapali is nearing an end in the markets. After the end of this month, the local variety, sour Ashina mango will intrude into the market.
However, with the ending of mango season, the price of the fruit is also in the increase.
Mango traders at Shalbagan, Shaheb Bazar, Seroil and Kantakhali said the price of mango is continually rising after the Eid-ul-Fitr and would continue to rise during the next weeks.
They blamed storm, extreme heat and hail storm for decrease in the production of mango in Rajshahi and Chapainawabganj this year. Moreover, the season of mango is nearing an end.
In the local markets, the Khirsapat variety of mango is selling at Tk 3,600 to Tk 4,000 per maund (40 kgs), Langra and Amrapali varieties were being sold at Tk 3,200 to Tk 3,600 per maund while the Fazli mango is selling at Tk 2,600 to Tk 2,800 per maund.
Moniruzzaman, a mango trader at Shalbagan area informed, the mango season is nearing an end but still Langra and Amrapali varieties of mangoes are seen to sell at the markets.
Many mango orchard owners of the district did not pluck mango during last Ramadan due to less demand for the fruit and targeting the market after the Eid, they kept those mangoes on the trees. As a result, there was a huge supply of mangoes in the markets after the Eid. But, now the supply of mango is waning gradually, he added.
Shamsul Haque, deputy director at the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Rajshahi, said the target of mango production was fixed at 2,18,000 tonnes in the district this year. But, due to fall in production and damage of mango due to storm, heat and hail, the target may not be achieved this year.
However, he said, despite a shortfall of production, there will be no problem in meeting the demand of mango across the country.
